Summary:

America began its wars on the water just ten months after launching its revolution. On October 13th, 1775 Congress approved the purchase and fitting out of warships for a Continental Navy. They didn't have proper ships or nearly enough of them, but they had thousand-mile coast filled with men bred to the sea, scores of shipyards and fine forests. America was a great nursery where seamen were raised, trained and maintained in time of peace to serve their country in time of war. Born into war is the beginning of a long journey on the sea with the United States Navy.
